CURDIES FAMILY FUN DAY SET TO CELEBRATE COMMUNITY, COUNTRY AND RIVER LIFE

Laughter, learning and river‑side adventure are on the menu when families, locals and visitors come together for the Curdies Family Fun Day on Saturday 16 May, from 10.00 am to 2.00 pm at Peterborough Hall.

This free, family ‑friendly celebration puts the spotlight on the Curdies River and its catchment, an area that supports local farming, tourism, biodiversity, cultural heritage and the wellbeing of the entire community.

Hosted by the Curdies River Coordinating Committee (CRCC), the day brings together culture, science, hands on fun and community storytelling‑ to celebrate what makes the Curdies River special and how everyone can help protect it for generations to come.

A river at the heart of the community

Community surveys show that the Curdies River is much more than a waterway — it’s a defining feature of the local landscape and lifestyle, supporting livelihoods, wildlife, recreation and a deep connection to place.

“The Curdies River is something we all share and care about,” said Sarah Holland Clift, Chair of the CRCC.

“This day is a celebration of the river, the people who live alongside it, and the great work already happening across the catchment. It’s also about inspiring more people to get involved in caring for this incredible place.”

Culture, conversation and connection

The day will open with a Welcome to Country and Smoking Ceremony led by Eastern Maar Aboriginal Corporation, honouring tens of thousands of years of cultural connection to Country and waterways.

From 10.00 am to 12.00 pm, a vibrant community forum will explore the story of the Curdies River from past to present and into the future. Highlights include:

• A keynote presentation by John Sherwood - Curdies River system from Crater to Coast
• An overview of the CRCC’s work and vision for the catchment
• A lively panel discussion with voices from land management, agriculture, water, conservation and local government

Food, fun and hands on‑ river adventures

From 12.00 pm to 2.00 pm, the celebration continues with food, displays and interactive activities designed for all ages, including:

• Citizen science experiences such as WaterWatch, bird identification and wildlife monitoring
• Children’s activities like water bug displays, marine touch tables, creative crafts and nature based‑ learning
• Free guided Landcare walks
• Free guided kayaking on the Curdies Estuary

Everyone’s invited

“Whether you’re a resident, landholder, student, visitor or just curious, there’s a place for you in caring for the Curdies River,” Ms Holland‑Clift said.
