FARMERS INVITED TO DISCOVER HOW HEALTHIER DAMS CAN BOOST PRODUCTIVITY AND BIODIVERSITY

September 30, 2026

Farmers and landholders across the Corangamite Catchment Management Authority (CMA) region are invited to attend a free, practical field day focused on enhancing farm dams to improve water quality, water security and biodiversity.

The Enhancing Farm Dams Field Day will be held on Friday 2 October from 10am to 2pm in Moriac, and will provide participants with the latest research, practical demonstrations and hands-on learning opportunities to help make farm dams more resilient in a changing climate.

Hosted by Corangamite CMA as part of its Testing the Waters project, the field day will showcase how well-managed farm dams can play an important role in supporting productive farming businesses while also creating valuable habitat for native species.

Attendees will learn about:

  • The latest research into farm dam enhancement
  • Practical steps for transforming farm dams into wildlife habitat
  • Dam monitoring techniques
  • Waterbug and wetland plant identification
  • Fencing, site preparation and revegetation methods.

The event will feature presentations from experts including Wetland Revival Trust Restoration Ecologist Damien Cook, Sustainable Farms Biodiversity Field Officer Nathan Gregory, and Corangamite CMA Citizen Science Officer Deirdre Murphy.

The day will commence at the Moriac Community Centre before participants visit a local farm to see farm dam enhancement in action. Lunch will be provided.

Corangamite CMA Sustainable Agriculture Senior Project Officer, Sarah Brien, said the field day offers a valuable opportunity for landholders to gain practical knowledge and connect with others interested in improving farm resilience.

"Farm dams are a critical asset for many farming businesses. By enhancing these important water sources, landholders can improve water security while creating habitat that supports biodiversity across the landscape.

"This field day will provide practical, on-ground advice that landholders can take home and apply on their own properties."

The event is free, but registrations are essential.
