VOLUNTEERS STRENGTHEN WATER MONITORING THROUGH REGIONAL QA/QC EVENTS

Corangamite Catchment Management Authority’s (CMA) EstuaryWatch and WaterWatch volunteers have come together this May for regional Quality Assurance/Quality Control (QA/QC) events, reinforcing the strength and reliability of citizen science data across the Corangamite region.

While QA/QC may sound technical, it plays a simple yet vital role—ensuring that all volunteers collect water quality data consistently and accurately. This is essential, as the information gathered supports scientists, land managers and decision-makers in protecting and managing the region’s waterways and estuaries.

During the sessions, volunteer monitoring groups worked with specially prepared ‘mystery samples’ designed to test and refine their equipment and techniques. Each sample contained key water quality parameters, including pH, electrical conductivity, turbidity and reactive phosphorus.

With guidance and real-time feedback provided throughout the sessions, volunteers were able to fine tune their methods, build confidence in their monitoring skills and ensure their data remains consistent and reliable.

This year’s events were further enriched by guest presentations from Associate Professor Peter Dahlhaus and Birgita Hansen from Federation University’s Centre for eResearch and Digital Innovation (CeRDI) in Ballarat.

Associate Professor Dahlhaus shared valuable insights into groundwater systems across southwest Victoria, highlighting their critical role in supporting ecosystems and delivering important environmental services. Meanwhile, Birgita Hansen introduced the national Latham’s Snipe Project, exploring the species’ conservation significance and examining the potential impacts of renewable energy infrastructure on bird life.

Beyond the technical learning, the events also provided an important opportunity for volunteers to connect—sharing experiences, asking questions and strengthening the supportive community that underpins Corangamite CMA’s citizen science programs.
