ENSURING ACCURACY AND RELIABILITY FOR OUR VOLUNTEERS

June 17, 2025
Citizen Science volunteers with Corangamite CMA project officer Georgie Custance

Throughout April and May, Corangamite CMA EstuaryWatch and WaterWatch volunteers participated in regional Quality Assurance/Quality Control (QAQC) events.

These sessions are a key part of maintaining high data integrity across the program. They help ensure that monitoring methods, equipment, and results are accurate, consistent, and reliable.

At each event, monitoring groups were given mystery samples to test the effectiveness of their techniques and equipment. Each group received a specially prepared bottle containing a mix of key parameters—pH, electrical conductivity, turbidity, and reactive phosphorus. By testing these samples, volunteers had the opportunity to check the performance of their equipment and techniques, with the added benefit of receiving on-the-spot feedback.

Beyond the technical checks, the events also offered a valuable opportunity for volunteers to connect with Corangamite CMA staff and fellow citizen scientists. Sharing experiences, asking questions, and learning from one another is all part of what makes these sessions so beneficial—and enjoyable.

Thank you to everyone who participated!
