FISH MONITORING ON THE BARWON RIVER WITH ARI

Last week, as part of our Urban Rivers and Catchments - Fish Passage Project, we met with Arthur Rylah Institute (ARI) on the Barwon River to conduct fish monitoring.

Over two days, ARI used a combination of fish sampling methods that included fyke nets at targeted locations and electro fishing techniques, to identify, count and measure fish within the river. This activity is being done prior to any works being undertaken to mitigate fish barriers as part of the projects baseline monitoring.

Fish monitoring using these methods will be undertaken upstream and downstream of the fish barrier sites for the duration of the 3-year project, including before and after the completion of works, to demonstrate the outcome of aquatic connectivity.

Small bodied migratory fish species that move between the estuary and the freshwater river are the intended target of this monitoring plan. Species sampled in this initial run included Common galaxias, tupong, flat-headed gudgeon, short fin eel, and estuary perch.

There were approximately 500 common galaxias captured below Buckley Falls, compared to none collected over the falls and Baum’s Weir. This is a clear indication that these fish struggle to migrate further upstream in the current conditions.
