NEW PEDESTRIAN BRIDGE PLANNED FOR MARNOCK VALE RESERVE

May 26, 2026

Corangamite Catchment Management Authority (CMA) has announced plans to replace the ageing wooden pedestrian bridge at Marnock Vale Reserve in Newtown, improving safety, enhancing accessibility and connectivity for the local community along the Barwon River.

Located at 55–69 Riversdale Road, the existing timber bridge is more than 20 years old and no longer meets the needs of the growing number of people who walk, run and enjoy the popular riverside trail.

The new bridge will be significantly wider, which will support safe and comfortable two-way pedestrian movement, making it easier for families, walkers, joggers and people with prams or mobility aids to share the space.

Silvana Iannello, Corangamite CMA Senior Project Officer – Barwon River through Geelong, said the upgrade was about ensuring the reserve continues to meet the needs of a growing and active community and reflects Corangamite CMA’s ongoing commitment to delivering high-quality community infrastructure and ensuring safe, accessible recreational spaces along the Barwon River.

“Marnock Vale Reserve is a much-loved space for locals and visitors alike, and this project is about making sure everyone can enjoy safe and easy access along the river.

“The new bridge will provide a more comfortable and accessible experience for all users, whether you’re out for a walk, exercising, or spending time with family and friends by the Barwon River.”

During construction, sections of the walking path will be temporarily closed. A clearly signed alternative route, including a temporary bridge, will be installed to maintain access along the trail and help visitors move safely around the area.

Works are expected to begin between June and July, with the new bridge anticipated to open in August.
