Water quality in the Barwon River through Geelong is safe for recreational activities, following a reduction in blue-green algae in water samples tested this week.
The test results received by the Corangamite CMA this week, show that current levels of blue-green algae, in accordance with Victorian Government guidance, no longer pose a risk to recreational users.
There is no longer a warning for users of the river to not come into physical contact with the water in the Barwon River through Geelong from below Baum's Weir to the Lower Breakwater.
Monitoring will continue, with weekly tests conducted and the public kept informed of any changes.
A combination of hot weather, low water flows and high nutrient levels in the Barwon River contributed to the blue-green algae outbreak.
For more information or to report a suspected blue-green algae outbreak, contact Corangamite CMA on 1800 002 262.
