VISUAL SIGHTINGS OF AN ALGAE OUTBREAK ON THE BARWON RIVER

February 28, 2024

We have been notified of visual sightings of an algae outbreak on the Barwon River. This is likely to contain toxic blue-green algae species.

The bloom has been noticed just upstream of the Shannon Avenue bridge near Yollinko wetlands and extends upstream towards Queens Park. Last week's testing on the 19th of February didn't observe any results reaching the guidelines for primary contact recreational use. However, we are currently awaiting the latest testing results and will conduct additional sampling.

We strongly advise that river users do not come into physical contact with the water as it may contain blue-green algae. In this instance, it can be seen as a strong green colour across the water surface. However, it is not always visible, and that's why we rely on the water sampling results for guidance.

Blue-green algae toxins are colourless and odourless and can remain at dangerous levels in water even after the blooms have disappeared.

It is strongly advised to wash water-based recreational equipment or craft after use on the river.
