HOW WE’RE USING SPATIAL DATA TO SUPPORT FIRE RECOVERY ACROSS THE CORANGAMITE REGION

When bushfires impact our landscapes, getting a clear picture of what’s been affected—and how badly—can be challenging. That’s why Corangamite Catchment Management Authority (CMA) is using spatial information and computer-based mapping to help guide our response. 

What we’re doing 

We combine up to date fire extent data from DEECA and VicEmergency with more than 25 years of Corangamite CMA environmental works records, along with mapped locations of significant native plants and animals. 

By layering all of this information together, our staff can quickly identify areas where natural assets may have been affected. 

Why we’re doing it 

In the days after a fire, it’s not possible to visit every site immediately—so this rapid, desktop-based mapping approach helps us understand potential impacts fast. 

This means we can respond more quickly to landholders, partner agencies and community groups seeking support. 

How the data helps 

The impact assessments guide our understanding of estimated recovery costs and help us identify investment needed to support restoration and rehabilitation work.

Telling the story of how bushfire affects our landscapes is complex, and it relies on access to the best available data. We continue to collaborate closely with partner agencies, researchers, and local stakeholders to share information and improve how we track and respond to fire impacts. 

Using spatial tools helps us see the bigger picture—so we can better protect the natural resources that matter to our communities.
