CORANGAMITE CMA IS HERE TO HELP THOSE AFFECTED BY BUSHFIRE

With extensive bushfire impacts across the state, and some areas continuing to burn in our region, Corangamite Catchment Management Authority (CMA) acknowledges the devastation caused to communities, landholders and Country. Our thoughts are with everyone affected and our role includes helping connect landholders with immediate supports available and starting to assess impacts to waterways and catchments.

When bushfires impact our landscapes, getting a clear picture of what’s been affected—and how badly—can be challenging. That’s why Corangamite CMA is using spatial information and computer-based mapping to help guide our response.  We combine up to date fire extent data from DEECA and VicEmergency with more than 25 years of Corangamite CMA environmental works records, along with mapped locations of significant native plants and animals. By layering all of this information together, our staff can quickly identify areas where natural assets may have been affected

For more than 25 years, Corangamite CMA has been working with farmers, Landcare and local groups to deliver environmental work across our catchment. The recent fires have impacted many of these communities and past work sites.

Land and Catchment Health, Project Officer Gene Gardiner has been contacting those impacted by the recent fires and says:

“This is a devastating incident. It’s upsetting to see river restoration projects damaged, especially knowing the years of hard work and dedication that locals have put into them. Having worked closely with these landholders, I understand how much these projects mean to them and to our community.”

Corangamite CMA is here to support our community, and we encourage any farmers or property owners affected by the recent fires to contact us so we can assess immediate environmental risks and assist with post‑fire waterway protection works.
