PLAINS FACTS WINTER EDITION IS HOT OFF THE PRESS!

June 19, 2026

🌾Keen to hear more about what's happening across the Victorian Volcanic Plain?

Find out in our Plains Facts winter edition, which is now live.

In it we explore:

  • the hidden secrets of native grassland seeds - how they survive and spread
  • the impact of summer fires near Mt Mercer - and signs of recovery
  • why iconic Featherheads are disappearing, and why it matters
  • a personal reflection on custodianship of grasslands
  • efforts to protect the endangered Hoary Sunray and restore native biodiversity

Once covering 2.3 million hectares, the Victorian Volcanic Plain’s native grasslands have been extensively cleared for agriculture. Today, less than 1% remain.

The Karrkiyn Warbulloc project aims to protect and restore the critically endangered Natural Temperate Grasslands and Grassy Eucalypt Woodlands of the Victorian Volcanic Plain on Wadawurrung Country. It is funded by the Australian Government Natural Heritage Trust and delivered by the Corangamite CMA, a member of the Commonwealth Regional Delivery Partners Panel, in partnership with Wadawurrung Traditional Owners Aboriginal Corporation.
