UPDATE 27 AUGUST 2024: The Barwon River Through Geelong is safe for recreational use. A section of the river between McIntyre Bridge and James Harris Bridge was impacted by a sewage spill on Thursday 22 August 2024, however results of water quality sampling undertaken by Barwon Water indicate that the site is no longer impacted by the spill.
23 AUGUST 2024:
The Barwon Through Geelong Walking Trail from McIntyre Bridge to James Harrison Bridge has reopened for public use following a sewage spill on Thursday 22 August 2024.
The community is advised to take a safety-first approach and avoid contact with the river while Barwon Water monitors the water quality over the coming days.
The spill occurred near Fernleigh Street and the McIntyre Bridge. It crossed a small section of the walking trail and flowed into the river. It was contained by Barwon Water crews on Thursday night and the area has been cleaned.
