Students turn 'River Detectives' for waterway health

May 23, 2017

The Corangamite region is now bursting at the seams with school students eager to become 'River Detectives'. Victoria's first online waterway education tool the 'River Detectives Program' brings Waterwatch into the classroom via an interactive website.
40 schools in the Corangamite region have signed up for the program and over 100 throughout Victoria. This means up to 5000 students will become River Detectives this year!

River Detectives Schools within the Corangamite region

When a school becomes a 'River Detective' school they are provided with a montoring kit, an interactive portal to record their citizen science data, resources to support the delivery of activities and professional learning sessions for teachers to develop their skills.
River Detective students can test habitat, water quality and macroinvertebrate (water bugs) information from local waterways and record their data via the website. The water bugs are always very popular!

River Detectives Coordinators from across Victoria

River Detectives directly aligns with the Victorian Government’s Water for Victoria plan and is funded by the Victorian Government. Waterwatch education across the Corangamite region is supported by Barwon Water, Central Highlands Water and City of Ballarat.
